A journey of a thousand miles...

A journey of a thousand miles...

starts with a single step. I guess this now counts as my first step on this journey where I can't even see the end.

A crummy looking ghost-blog using a free standard theme. Not even a working domain-name and a rant that camouflages as a post.

I am a programmer. I like to design efficient systems/workflows and for some reason I thought it smart to self-host this blog.

Sure enough - it was not hard for me to set it up

- I reset my Strato VPS
- did basic server hardening
- installed docker and docker compose
- threw in compose-files for traefik, ghost and a database

Voila - you got yourself a blog. Or do you? Well yes technically...

Lets just say, after
- paying around 30$ for a basic .com-domain ("transfer"),
- waiting for 5 more days
- and giving up my free whois protection
I will have this blog on a proper domain instead of an ip-address, at least after I fix the base-url that will then be broken...

Total Cost: ~ 17$ and a slight damper on the mood because of the rat race and the long wait...

Update December 27th 2022:
Another attempt to transfer the domain failed and led to several talks to both supports. Guess who learned that he was being stupid, wasted two weeks and should have just created a new A-Record that points to the server IP to fix this particular issue...

So how will this continue?

I would like to document what i do and learn in the hopes that others might find my little experiments inspiring and my notes helpful.

I feel happiest if I can produce useful things so this is as much a documentation as it is a way to keep me happy.

It also is a very neat way to organize my thoughts - going from the standard random creative mode to a streamlined presentation of results.

I guess you can look forward to some posts detailing my setup process.
